Miner dies, another remains trapped
JOHANNESBURG – Rescue teams are now in the process of retrieving the body of a miner who died during a rockfall at the Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg, while the search for his colleague continues.
The two miners went missing on Tuesday at the North West mine.
Management says there’s been no communication with the second miner and teams are fearing the worst.
Impala Platinum Spokesperson Johan Theron says, “We’ve not been able to recover the body yet and those operations are continuing while we’re searching for the second miner. We haven’t been able to establish any communication with the second miner. We have also now been able to get into where we believe the voids might be and we have not been able to locate him there.”
Earlier this year, four miners were killed in an underground fire at the same mine.
