Two miners killed in Benguet gas poisoning incident

Two miners died of gas poisoning inside a mine tunnel in Tublay town in Benguet province on Friday afternoon, a police report said Saturday.

Citing initial information from the provincial police office, Superintendent Isagani Nerez, Cordillera Regional Police director, said the incident happened inside a tunnel in Sitio Piket in Barangay Caponga at about 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Police identified that fatalities as Francis Michael Sagudin, 39, from Kabayan, Benguet; and Marlon Baristo Agsalo, 21, Tublay, Benguet.

An initial investigation showed the two, together with five other co-workers, went out of the main tunnel at about 4 p.m.

Agsalo, however, went back to visit one of his subway tunnels. But after an hour Sagudin left the group to check on Agsalo.

After a 10-minute wait for the two to emerge from the subway tunnel, a co-miner instructed one John Depaynos to trace the two.

While inching his way inside the sub-tunnel, Depaynos smelled poisonous gas, prompting him to move out. He then told his companions about the situation.

Using a blower to cleanse the tunnel of the noxious gas as they moved in, the group found the bodies of Agsalo and Sagudin at about 6:30 p.m.

The remains of the victims were brought to their respective residence, police said.
