Miner dies in blast, Lucena City

CAMP G. NAKAR, Lucena City – A 35-year-old miner died after a dynamite exploded in a mine site in Barangay Dapdap, Calauag town, police reported yesterday.

Senior Supt. Ronaldo Genaro E. Ylagan, Quezon police head, identified the victim as Elmer C. Burgos, of Barangay Basiad, Sta. Elena, Camarines Norte. Police investigation said the incident happened at about 11 a.m. last Sunday while the victim and his fellow miners were working in a small-scale mining site.

Police said that the victim placed and lighted a dynamite on a hole he excavated.

The victim’s co-miners advised him to move quickly away from the hole since the dynamite may explode within 15 minutes.

But instead of heeding them, the victim stayed inside the hole and leaned on the dynamite until it exploded. (Danny Estacio)
