Coal mine blast kills 7 in Ukraine
KIEV, April 11 (Xinhua) — At least seven people were killed when a blast ripped through a coal mine in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region early Friday, authorities said.
The explosion took place at around 6:30 a.m. local time (0430 GMT) when a large amount of methane gas was ignited at the Scotchynsky mine in Donetsk city, according to the State Service for Mine Safety Supervision.
A total of 78 miners were underground when the explosion occurred 1,300 meters below the surface, it said. There was no immediate report about the injured workers.
Operations at the mine were suspended and investigation into the accident is under way.
