One man dies in cave-in in Karviná Mine

A 42-year-old miner died in a cave-in in the Karvina Mine on Thursday, Marek Sibrt, spokeswoman for the OKD mining company, told CTK Friday.

He said a group of experts are investigating the causes of the accident.

Sibrt said the partial cave-in occurred in the depth of some 1000 metres at 5:30 CET on Thursday and was about eight metres long.

The dead man, whom rescuers only extricated during the night, was the only person on the spot at the moment, he said.

The doctor said the man suffered injuries incompatible with life.

The miner was not the first OKD employee who died this year. In mid-February, a 60-year-old employee was found dead in the coal processing facility of the CSM Mine.

He was lying under a layer of coal on a loaded waggon. The cause of his death has not yet been ascertained.

Two mining rescuers died in the CSM Mine last April. They were probably poisoned when taking samples of the air from closed spaces.
