Odisha: MCL coal mine mishap death toll rises to 10

Ten labourers were dead as coal dump collapses at Basundhara-Garjanbahal mines of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Sundargarh. This incident occurred in Saturday morning. Nearly 4 others were rescued.

Bodies of ten persons have so far been recovered and five persons rescued from the site at the Kulda open cast Basundhara-Garjanbahal coal mine area. More than 20 people were feared trapped inside and four people have been rescued so far. Rescue operation is still going on. The victims were the locals and nearby villagers.

Meanwhile, expressing concern about the incident Chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for families of deceased. The chief minister ordered a probe by Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) and asked MCL to help in the rescue operation.

Similarly, MCL authorities announced Rs 3 lakh ex-gratia each to the families of nine laboureres killed in the mishap. The company also declared Rs 10,000 financial assistance each for funeral of the victims.
