2 killed in illegal coal mine collapse

BOKARO: Two brothers were killed on Monday when a part of a coal mine of Bharat Coking Coal in the Dugdha police station area collapsed. The duo was illegally excavating coal from the abandoned mine when the accident happened around 5 am.

Family members of Sahru Mahto (32) and his younger brother Bhim (26) of Patrakulhi village in Chandrapura block hid the bodies to keep the incident under wraps. However, police recovered the body from their house.

Pawan Kumar Mahto, BDO Chandrapura and circle officer Rajesh Kumar Sahu assessed the situation. An FIR has been lodged in this connection with Bokaro-Jharia outpost of Dughda police station.

The incident once again puts focus on the rampant illegal mining and frequent deaths caused due to mine collapse in the area and the authorities’ apathy in curbing such activity. This is the second such incident in the area in 15 months. On February 7, 2012, five women were killed at Prem Pahari under Chandrapura police station.

Narrating about the incident, officer incharge of Bokaro-Jharia Outpost, Ram Pyare Ram said that the incident occurred around 5 am when the two brothers entered inside 50 feet deep of the closed coal mine. They were digging coal when the upper surface subsided on them and they were crushed inside.

MLA, Dumri, Jagarnath Mahto and other local leaders reached the spot and expressed condolence over deaths. DC, Bokaro, Aarva Rajkamal said that police investigation is being initiated on the matter. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post mortem.
