Miner dies in pit (Zambia)
A MINER has died at Mopani Copper Mines (MCM) in Mufulira after falling into a pit while working underground. Both United Mineworkers Union of Zambia (UMUZ) secretary general Wisdom Ngwira and Mufulira branch chairperson Yosum Nyirongo confirmed the development in an interview yesterday. Mr Ngwira said Julius Chanda of section 128D in Butondo fell into a pit while working on level 1240 on Monday night. “I can confirm that we had a mine accident at MCM in Mufulira involving a miner whose man number is M61945. We have identified the deceased as Julius Chanda of Butondo who fell into a pit on Monday night,” he said. And Mr Nyirongo said the body of Mr Chanda was retrieved on Tuesday around 12:00 hours at level 1340 and it is lying in the Malcolm Watson Hospital mortuary awaiting burial. He said UMUZ regrets the death of Mr Chanda because he was a hardworking member who greatly contributed to the growth of the union. Mr Nyirongo said UMUZ is still waiting for a report to determine whether the deceased overlooked safety precautions or the company did not provide the necessary safety equipment. “The tunnel where Mr Chanda fell is rough and he might have sustained serious injuries. His body was retrieved at level 1340 underground. We are still waiting for a report to ascertain what exactly happened,” he said.
