One dead after underground coal mine collapses (USA)

According to the Associated Press, Kentucky officials are investigating a collapse at a Pike County coal mine that killed a miner who was working underground.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing released the information late today.

Officials say the collapse happened this morning at McCoy Elkhorn Coal Corp.’s No. 23 mine.

The agency says 33-year-old Farley Sargent was laying track underground when a portion of the wall fell into the corridor.

State officials said it was the second mining-related death in Kentucky this year.
