Flooding in 2 Chinese coal mines kills at least 15 miners

BEIJING — Flooding in two Chinese coal mines has killed at least 15 miners.

State television and the official Xinhua News Agency say at least 10 miners were killed in a mine in the northern province of Shanxi. The fate of one missing miner was unknown following the flood Friday morning.

Sunday’s reports said at least five miners were killed in an unrelated underground flood in a mine Saturday in the central province of Henan. Xinhua said an unknown number of other miners might be missing.

China’s coal mines are among the world’s deadliest and suffer chronic explosions, cave-ins and flooding. Repeated safety crackdowns have lowered the death rate, but hundreds of fatalities still are reported every year.
