11 Trapped in Blast at Coal Mine in NW China

XI’AN – Eleven people were trapped underground Sunday after a gas explosion at a coal mine in Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, local authorities said.

Altogether 21 miners were working underground when the blast happened around 11:30 am at the Tianyu Coal Mine in rural Tongchuan, the city government said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

So far, 10 of the miners have managed to escape the shaft but 11 are still trapped.

The rescue operation is underway.
