Nchanga miner dies in blast (Zambia)

A MINER has died at Nchanga underground mine, bringing to two the number of people who have died at Konkola Copper Mines operated units on the Copperbelt.

KCM manager for communications Shapi Shachinda, said Nelson Kalima died at Nchanga underground mine in Chingola on Monday afternoon.

The 27-year-old Kalima was working for one of the contractor companies engaged at the Nchanga underground mine and died in an incident during secondary blasting, according to Shachinda.

“Investigations have been launched to ascertain the cause of the regrettable accident and to reinforce measures for preventing similar incidents in future,” said Shachinda without providing details on any impact it will likely have on output at Nchanga underground.

Last week, another miner died at KCM, the country’s second-largest mining company by output, after an accident during maintenance at its Konkola Mine division located in Chililabombwe.

The miner was working for a company contracted by KCM to repair the mine’s concentrator.
