8 Killed after Iron Ore Mine Collapses in E. China
Eight people were killed and five injured after an iron ore mine collapsed in east China’s Fujian Province Friday afternoon, local authorities said Saturday.
The cave-in was triggered by a nearby landslide at around 1:30 p.m. Friday in Peifeng Township, Yongding County, according to a statement from the county government.
The eight victims were identified as workers from Jiangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangsu and Fujian provinces.
The police said they had detained one of the mine’s three owners who had fled and tried to cover the accident.
The government was unaware of the accident until it was reported by local residents at 7:30 p.m.. Friday.
Investigators said the mine had been under illegal operation and a further probe into the cause of the accident was under way.
