Man killed in mine accident near Somerset, Colorado

Federal officials are investigating an accident at the West Elk Mine near Somerset this evening after a 53-year-old man working there died after a fall of about eight feet.

The unidentified victim was a contract construction worker, the Mine Safety and Health Administration said.

The worker fell from a catwalk platform about 3 p.m. and struck an I-beam on the ground below, according to federal and Gunnison County law enforcement reports.

The worker was initially conscious and was being taken by ambulance to Delta County Memorial Hospital when he stopped breathing, a spokesman for the federal agency said.

Ambulance attendants administered resuscitation efforts until arrival at the hospital, where hospital personnel continued cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Hospital personnel were unable to revive the victim and he was pronounced dead, the federal agency said.
