Man dies at Logan County mine

YOLYN, W.Va. — A coal miner died Saturday while working at a surface mine owned by a Patriot Coal subsidiary in Logan County.

According to Ray Bryant, Logan County’s emergency management authority supervisor, the man was working on heavy equipment at the Guyan Surface Mine at the time of his death. Bryant said the man appeared to have died from traumatic injuries.

Bryant, speaking from the scene of the accident late Saturday night, said he would not release the man’s name or any other details. He said the accident is under investigation.

The Guyan Surface Mine, near Yolyn, is operated by Apogee Coal, a Patriot Coal subsidiary.

The death is the fourth coal-mining death in the United States this year, and the second in West Virginia.
