Two die, seven injured in rock fall
Two men died and seven were injured in a rockfall at the Driefontein gold mine near Carletonville on Thursday, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.
Spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said the rockfall occurred at 10am in the Masakhane shaft and was caused by earth tremors.
A miner and a winch-driver were trapped and died. Seven other miners were trapped and injured, one seriously.
Seshoka said a rescue operation was undertaken and all miners were freed by 2pm.
“There is an ongoing search for more miners as we are not sure how many were under there,” he said.
