One Body Found, Six More Still Missing After Colliery Flood in North China
TANGSHAN, Hebei, April 6 (Xinhua) — Rescuers Wednesday retrieved one body and are still trying to reach the other six trapped miners, five days after a Tangshan coal mine they were in got flooded.
Constant cave-ins and floods have stymied efforts of rescuers, who have cleared more than 400 meters of blocked or inundated parts of the shaft since the Wali Coal Mine, which is located in Kaiping District of Tangshan, north China’s Hebei Province, was flooded at 10 p.m. Friday, trapping seven workers underground.
Local authorities said the trapped workers were undertaking maintenance work when the flooding occurred. Mining in the colliery had been halted before the incident in preparation for the mine’s reconstruction.
