Miner dies at Marikana mine
A miner has died at the Marikana platinum mine in Rustenburg, in the North West, mining company Lonmin Plc said on Tuesday.
“It is with great regret that Lonmin Plc announces that in the late hours of Monday, March 28, the company recorded its fourth fatal accident for this financial year and its third in 2011,” said Lonmin spokesman Ravin Maharaj.
The man was crushed in a “mud rush incident”, but the details were not clear yet, he said.
“At this point, an investigation is being conducted into the specifics.”
The miner’s name was being withheld until his next-of-kin had been informed.
Maharaj said production at the mine would be halted on Wednesday “so each and every employee can re-affirm their commitment to our core value of zero harm”.
