One killed in Dhanbad mine cave-in
Less than 40 hours of a mine cage lift collapsing in Bharat Coking Coal Limited’s Chandmari colliery, the roof of Kumbardubi colliery, under Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), caved in here today killing one miner and injuring one other.
The injured, identified as Naresh Nonia, was rushed to Sanctoria Hospital in Asansol.
The incident, which took place in the small hours of the morning, caused furore among the labourers, who led by union leaders, staged a demonstration to protest against the negligent attitude of the authorities towards safety norms and demanded compensation and a job for the kin of the deceased.
The situation, however, was brought under control after the arrival of senior ECL officials, including additional general manager of Mugma A. Mallik, who promised to cough up Rs 45,000 in cash and a job to the kin of the deceased as compensation.
The officials also agreed to assign light work to Nonia after he resumed work.
According to eyewitnesses, pump operator Badal Bauri and cable man Naresh Nonia were working in pit number two of the colliery when the roof of the mine suddenly collapsed, trapping the duo.
While Bauri is alleged to have received head injuries and died on the spot, Nonia was rescued and rushed to Sanctoria Hospital in Asansol where his condition is stated to be critical.
“We want the management authorities to conduct an inquiry to find out the truth and take action against anyone found guilty,” said union leader U.N. Pathak.
Other union leaders, including S.C. Jha, U.N. Pathak, Sudhanshu Sekhar Jha and Chandi Charan Patar, also took part in the agitation.
