Falling rock kills miner in CamSur

MANILA, Philippines – A Chinese mining firm employee has died after being hit by a falling rock in the head during heavy downpour in Lagonoy, Camarines Sur, police said Saturday.

Police identified the Chinese as Chen Te Hao, an employee of Prime Work Mining Corp. in Sitio Benguet, Barangay Gimagtocon.

A belated police report said Chen died after being hit by a falling rock during heavy downpour around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday (January 6).

The victim died while being rushed to hospital.

In a report on Saturday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said it has confirmed 33 deaths due to landslides and flooding caused by continuous rains in 8 regions.

The Chinese national has yet to be included in the list of fatalities.

The NDRRMC reported that a total of 171,724 families or 883,128 persons in 21 provinces in Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Bicol, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Caraga and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have been affected by continuous rains.

Weather bureau PAGASA said the heavy rains are brought on by a tail-end of a cold front affecting southern Luzon and Visayas.

The weather bureau expects heavy raining to continue on Saturday in Bicol and Eastern Visayas. It has warned of more incidents of landslides and flashfloods in the affected areas.
