1 miner dies, another injured in Darkov mine

Karvina, North Moravia, Dec 19 (CTK) – A 48-year-old miner died and another miner suffered a light injury in an accident in the Darkov coal mine near Karvina owned by the OKD company this afternoon, OKD spokesman Vladislav Sobol told CTK yesterday.

It has been the third fatal accident in the OKD mines this year.

The miner died some 800 metres under the ground.

The other miner was transported to hospital with a light injury to undergo a preventive check-up, according to a doctor’s first information.

A commission comprising representatives of the Ostrava District Mining Office, the Darkov mine management, OKD and trade unions is investigating the causes of the tragic accident, Sobol said.

Last year three miners died in the OKD mines and 346 suffered work-related injuries, which was 70 fewer than a year before. In 2008 seven fatalities were reported.

In late June, a 34-year-old miner was killed by loose rock and another five were injured in the Darkov mine.

In February, a 43-year-old miner succumbed to injuries caused by a cutter-loader some 1000 metres under the ground.

OKD, the largest employer in the region, invested over 0.5 billion crowns in labour safety in the past two years.
