W.Va. school empties to allow coal mining nearby
DALLAS, W.Va. (AP) – A Marshall County elementary is preparing to close while a coal company mines around the school.
The Intelligencer newspaper reported Sunday that 56 students, their teachers and the principal from Sand Hill Elementary are moving to Hilltop Elementary shortly. They’ll be there while Canonsburg, Pa.-based Consol Energy Inc. mines.
Consol is planning to mine on one side of the school for about six weeks. The company will return to mine on the other side after classes let out for the summer.
Marshall County school official Tom Wood says supplies have been moved to four temporary classrooms at Hilltop.
