Miner dies at Ezulwini mine

A miner has died after a fall of ground at the Ezulwini mine in Westonaria, outside Johannesburg, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Tuesday.

“A mineworker lost his life (in the early hours of Tuesday morning) at the Rand Uranium’s Ezulwini mine in Gauteng after a fall of ground,” said NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka.

“The mineworker initially sustained serious injuries and died on his way out of the mine.”

Ezulwini Mining company were unavailable to comment.

Meanwhile another miner is missing at AngloGold Ashanti’s Mponeng mine near Carletonville, south-west of Johannesburg.

“ (His) whereabouts remain unknown after being lost underground (on Monday) afternoon,” Seshoka said.

“The worker (has) served the company for a number of years and is a supervisor at the mine.

“It is believed that he told his team to catch one lift and that he would catch another lift on another floor… we think he got tired while walking to it and got lost.

“The entire team is being questioned”.

AngloGold were not immediately available for comment.

Seshoka could not provide details about the ages of the miners or where they come from because their families had not been informed of the incidents yet.
