Explosion rips through coal mine in northeastern Colombia, killing 6 workers
BOGOTA — Authorities say a coal mine explosion in northeastern Colombia has killed six workers.
Regional disaster chief Luis Alfonso Tarazona says rescuers searched the San Roque mine all night after Tuesday’s blast in Sardinata, in Norte de Santander state.
He says they found six bodies, which authorities were planning to carry aboveground Wednesday.
Explosions of accumulated gases are a common hazard in coal operations.
In June, a blast killed 73 people at the San Fernando coal mine in the northwestern state of Antioquia.
