Chilean mine collapse halts rescue work, 34 trapped

34 workers trapped inside a gold and copper mine in northern Chile may never be found with rescuers calling off their search.

A new collapse on Saturday at the mine caused the teams to withdraw from ventilation shafts they had entered to try to get to the trapped miners.

The 34 miners were trapped 300 metres underground when a tunnel caved in Thursday.

Officials at the mine have said they have no idea how long the miners can survive as no one has yet been able to communicate with them.
