Miner killed in Illinois coal mine

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is investigating a fatal accident at coal mine in southern Illinois.

A miner, whose name has not been released, was killed Friday after being struck by a shuttle car used to haul coal underground. The Willow Lake Mine death occurred at a Peabody Energy facility located in Saline County. The facility was shut down for an investigation by the IDNR.

Since late 2008, Peabody Energy has been fined $230,000 for violations at the Willow Lake Mine.

Vice Svec, Sr. Vice President at Peabody Energy, released the following statement late Friday afternoon:

“We are all very much saddened and in mourning regarding the loss of a colleague. There is a lot we don’t know about the circumstances surrounding it. We are working with IDNR to conduct an investigation. The mine has been shut down. Family members have been contacted. We are trying to piece together the events surrounding what happened. It involved a shuttle car that was hauling coal through the mine. The employee who died was a supervisor with many years of experience. We express our condolences to the family.”
