Five miners die after accident at north South Africa mine

RUSTENBURG, SOUTH AFRICA (BNO NEWS) — Five miners were killed and another was injured after a mine accident in north South Africa on late Tuesday, a Union said on Wednesday.

The accident happened late on late Tuesday at the Marikana operation owned by Aquarius Platinum in Rustenburg, a city in north South Africa. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said the workers, who were contracted to Murray and Roberts Cementation, died after ‘a fall of ground.’

Two of the five bodies had been retrieved as of early Wednesday, while recovery operations for the three other bodies were underway. A sixth miner was critically injured in the accident, while a seventh person escaped unhurt.

The NUM said it was shocked by the accident and called for a thorough investigation. “This is a disaster. At a time when the industry brags of its so called ‘improved safety’, we now have disasters raising their ugly heads again,” said Frans Baleni, NUM General Secretary. “We pass our condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in this terrible accident.”
