Turkey: Coal Mine Accidents Claim 66 Lives In Five Months
BURSA (TURKEY), May 26 (Bernama) — Some 66 miners were killed in coal mine accidents, which took place in Turkey in the last five months, Anadolu News Agency reported. Three coal mine accidents, which occured in Bursa, Balikesir and Zonguldak, between December 10, 2009 to May 17, 2010, showed that the nation’s safety measures for coal miners were not sufficient, said Mehmet Torun of the Chamber of Mine Engineers. He said thousand of coal miners in Turkey, work in harsh conditions, hundreds of metres below the ground and even risk death to make a living. “We have prepared a risk map and identified nine priority risk areas including Zonguldak, Manisa, Corum and Ermenek. We made warnings against possible deadly explosions and collapses in mines and called for measures and inspections,” Torun, quoted by Anadolu as saying.
