Mine collapse kills 16 in northwest Tanzania
DODOMA, TANZANIA (BNO NEWS) — Sixteen people were killed and two dozen others were injured when a gold mine collapsed in northwest Tanzania, according to a newspaper report on Wednesday.
The accident happened on Monday in the Sobora village of Geita District in the country’s Mwanza Region, according to the Daily News newspaper. At least 16 bodies had been recovered, while 20 others had been injured. An unspecified number of people were still missing.
“We were 60 of us in the mine because after it was established there was gold in it, many people went into it and started digging,” said Masanja Jamatoni, one of the survivors. “All of a sudden a heap of sand buried us though I was one of the lucky ones who survived.”
