2 miners dead, 2 missing in S. Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY – Two miners died while two others remained missing when a power outage cut off air supply to a goldmine tunnel in T’boli, South Cotabato on Thursday, officials said Friday.

Ramon Ponce de Leon, South Cotabato environmental management office chief, said locals retrieved the remains of Toto and Gary Olin, who likely died from suffocation, after the incident was reported to authorities around 5 p.m.

Ponce De leon said the Olins and two more miners still missing were likely confused when power went out and the air supply cut off inside the tunnel in Kamatu village.

“The rotational brownout in Mindanao rendered the machine providing oxygen to malfunction,” Ponce de Leon said.

He said rescuers started a search and rescue operation for the two other siblings of the fatalities, Boy and Adel Olin.

Senior Inspector Marvin Dua-Dua, head of police in T’boli, said they would do everything to locate Boy and Adel.

Bai Zorahayda Taha, regional director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, said she instructed her staff to provide assistance to the victims’ family.
