Kentucky coal miner killed in mine accident

A Kentucky coal miner has been killed in a mining accident. Travis G. Brock, 29, was killed Friday in a mine accident at the Abner Branch Rider mine in Leslie County, Kentucky. Brock, of Helton, Kentucky, was hit by falling debris from a “rib roll”–a coal support pillar, divided by a rock seam, collapsing. The accident happened at 9:15 a.m. Brock was an operator of a continuous miner, a machine with a rotating drum and carbide teeth used to scrape coal from a seam. The mine is owned by Bledsoe Coal Company. The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing is investigating the accident. The mine will remain closed until a site investigation and interviews are complete. Kentucky had four mine-related fatalities in 2009. Brock’s death is the first one in 2010.
