Worth of a miner’s life: 15,000 liras
The owner of a Bursa mine in which 19 were killed Dec. 10 said Tuesday that 15,000 Turkish Liras in compensation would be paid to the relatives of those who died. Making the announcement through the press, Nurullah Ercan said he was very sorry and sent his condolences to the families of the dead miners. In addition to the compensation, Ercan said the mining company would cover the educational expenses of the offspring of the deceased, adding that these children would be welcome to work for the company in the future if they so chose. Ercan also thanked Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız, Labor and Social Security Minister Ömer Dinçer, State Minister Faruk Çelik and other authorities for their efforts after the incident. The mine owner denied news reports that he had tried to disappear following the collapse, citing health reasons for his non-appearance in the wake of the fatal accident.
