Eastern Ky. Miner Killed By Falling Rock

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) A miner in eastern Kentucky has died after a roof collapsed and a large piece of rock fell on him. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says 35-year-old Phillip Newton, a continuous mining machine operator for Sapphire Coal Company, died Wednesday at 11:55 p.m. The agency says a 13-foot-long, 6-foot-deep piece of shale fell on Newton in the Sandlick Two mine just outside of Whitesburg. Letcher County Coroner Wallace Bolling told WYMT-TV that rescue workers tried to free Newton, but the man did not survive the trauma. The mine was shut down immediately following the accident, and officials will continue investigating what happened. Everidge Funeral Home in Whitesburg is handling the arrangements, which were pending Thursday morning.
