1 dead, 4 hurt, in coal mine explosion
MANILA, Philippines – A miner died and four others were hurt in an explosion that occurred inside a small-scale coal mine in Zamboanga Sibugay province Thursday night, a police official said on Friday. Chief Superintendent Angelo Sunglao, Zamboanga peninsula police director, identified the lone fatality as Evan Tulabing, who died on the spot. Initial investigation revealed that at 6:20 p.m., a small group of miners was installing electrical lights in the small-scale coal mine owned and operated bya certain Jose Dagpin situated at Barangay (village) Lumbog, Imelda town when the explosion occurred. The group reportedly noticed gas emissions coming in from the tunnel prior to the explosion, Sunglao said. Four other miners sustained multiple degree burns on different parts of their bodies. Sunglao identified them as Edwin Nagar, Jesie Tinay, Ramil Ortiola and Boyet Banda. The four were brought to the Lanceta Medical Clinic for treatment.
