Worst mining tragedy ever to hit Ghana: At least 18 dead (14 women), more missing
ACCRA – At least 18 illegal gold miners, including 14 women, have been killed in a collapse in an illegal gold mine in Ghana, a senior police officer told AFP Thursday. “This is the biggest mining tragedy that has ever hit Ghana,” Western Region police commander Kojo Antwi Tabi said. He said he believed that 30 miners were working in the privately-owned gold mine in Dompoase town before it caved in, and that more bodies were likely to be recovered. “The government must take measures to control the activities of miners,” he added.
