Miner dies at accident-hit Harmony Gold mine
JOHANNESBURG – A miner died in a fall of ground accident on Tuesday at the Doornkop mine near Krugersdorp, Harmony Gold said.
Doornkop is the same mine where nine workers died in February after a tremor caused the shaft to collapse.
“Investigations into the accident are under way. All production at the mine has been stopped by management,” the company said.
Harmony’s chief executive officer Graham Briggs and his management team conveyed their condolences to the deceased’s families and colleagues.
Safety in South African mines has remained a concern, even though the industry has stressed that their track record has improved.
An inquiry into the death of nine mineworkers who died at Gold Fields’ South Deep gold mine in May 2008 will start on Wednesday at the Westonaria Magistrate Court, west of Johannesburg.
