Female miner killed on East Rand
Johannesburg – A female mineworker died at the Grootvlei Mine near Springs, on the East Rand, early on Wednesday, said the National Union of Mineworkers. “She was killed by a conveyer belt,” spokesperson Shane Choshane said in a statement. Describing her death as “untimely and preventable”, he reiterated the NUM’s call on the mining industry to focus on safety measures especially during the festive season. Choshane said more than 165 mineworkers had died so far this year.
